what has struck me most about the events in the past week has been the retirement of the Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad. He is, to me, a most fascinating personality and at his age,75, he holds so much energy that it simply doesn't resemble a typical senior citizen.
my dad went in to malaysia the day he was due to resign(coincidentally) and he purchased a copy of the 'Star' and 'The New Straits Times'. I'm glad he did. The Star ran a special edition on Mahathir and gave a very humourous and detailed account of his time in office. THis man has been in office for 22 years now and political clock for his prime ministerialship has ended.
I remember watching a show on travel discovery channel and it showed his family and him going to the Antartica. The whole show showed his animatedness and his endless energy. here he was, with the burden of a country on his shoulders, yet able to show his human side. he was really enjoying himself, his laughter obviously not for the cameras only. I really respect him as a human, for having lived a life like his, he is still able to discover the zest to explore and learn new things.
Something i learnt about setbacks frm this leader. He was kicked out of UMNO(e malaysian ruling party) when he voiced his unhappiness. However, he established himself again with the politcal community and clawed back to be a cabinet minister and thereafterprime minister. i shan't comment on his ruliing of the country, i believe many view stand to be aired on tt count. i admire his grit and determination. at the point of isolation and with defeat staring so eminently in his face, he was able to conjure the courage and bravery to say his mind. tt is the mark of a true leader. coming back from huge loss(es) and being able to go about with the same amount of confidence is truely remarkable. that is what i look for in myself as well.
having gone tru the past year, a sham because of certain chinks in my actions previously, i am truely and well on my way to rehabilitation. i look to pursue that even further.
Dr Mahathir, the man. for it is easy to criticize, let us step back and look at ourselves as humans. we are all human, we all have our agendas, we all have different methods of fufilling these agendas. It is because we are human tt's y some will succeed where others will fail. Never lose hope, Always look forth.
