i'm thinking about the falling birth rates in Singapore. i'm not the only one. so many government policy-makers are also wrecking their brains to address this 'severe' issue of falling birth rates. so far, there have been all these solutions, starting w the family, giving longer leave, more flexi hours, less working hours, ending work earlier on family day to have dinner with your family etc. in my opinion, some of these incentives may not work too well. we have come quite a bit to have to make time with your family. in the past, it was all so natural for one to return to his or her home for meals, at least once a day. some people still go home for lunch in today's context.

i'm not here to criticise. i'm here to suggest.

our falling birth rates are inversely proportional to our abortion figures. as less and less children are entering the world on our island, more and more are not given a chance to see the world. how does this work? if all these children were not aborted, our raw birth rates would not be so low. easier said than done, it's highly irresponsible to bring a child into this world without having the means to care for the child. statistically, abortions are carried out on very very young girls ; teenagers who have done things in haste and want to correct their mistake.

the human body is able to reproduce at a fairly young age. just after a dozen years of physical development, most males and females are able to reproduce. however, the reproduction process starts late on, with most starting around ten years after they are physically ready. here is an issue of preparing mentally for the task of reproducing and caring for the child. at 14 years of age, most humans are quite unable to care for a baby in a responsible and sustained manner.
they lack the skills and knowledge that our mothers have in teaching, caring and raising us, their own flesh and blood.

imagine if we can all develop our mental states to the extent of being able to go our own ways midway through teenhood. if people grow up faster and reach the stage where they have the mental and physical capacity to handle reproduction responsibly, we would not have to suffer so many abortions. while an abortion is very much a pain felt most acutely by the female, it is also a stab into our society's heart. not only has a child been denied the chance of entering this world, we have also failed to ensure the safe passage of the child, hence resulting in heartbreaking termination.

i speak for cases of abortion where would-be parents exercised their choice and their choice only, a selfish decision that only they themselves can vindicate.
