i'm just back from a midday run and i've just caused the death of a bird.

it was in the centre of the pavement and i was approaching it from behind. it didn't realise that i was coming in close until i ran past it. shocked, it panicked and fluffed its wings, flapping haphazardly. it crossed my path and i had to stop momentarily to avoid hitting it. it landed on the road which was free of vehicles at that instant, but not for long. it was in the centre lane of the three lane road and it wasn't before long vehicles came along from the traffic junction just metres away. the first car missed it but a translink bus came along. its wheels missed the bird. i had thought the bird had made it. the bird panicked again and it took off, albeit very late. it smacked into the undercarriage and flopped back to the road. whether it was a fatal injury or a slight concussion didn't matter as the vehicles that came subsequently simply ran over the bird.
it was squashed and it was certainly dead. gosh, why was the bird so ... argh.
