Why is it called a deadline?

Stemming from the Civil War, from Andersonville Prison, the horrible camp for captured Confederate soliders. There was a stockade fence around the camp, and seventeen feet further out they had marked out another line. Any prisoner who crossed that final line was shot on sight. It was, naturally, called the deadline.

When it comes to work, it may help to have 2 time frames: the Fence and the deadline.
Say you're working on a proposal for promoting a cruise line. We'll assign you a fence. That means your rough ideas are due on Feb 1. Then you get a deadline, which is seventeen days past that. The grace space between the fence and the deadline is the time given to improve on your work and on suggestions. This takes away added stress and time is allocated for change and improvements.

Worth a thought.
