30/07/2007
The 2007 osim triathlon was impeded by the inclement weather. There was nothing the organisers could do about the weather and the contigency race format was applaudable. It allowed a semblence of a race to take place, and all was not lost.

As a swimmer, my role was significantly reduced to a 400m sprint down the beach, up a wooden bridge and into a mud bath. The transition area, which was initially a field, had been transformed into a pool of mud. In some areas, the mud was so thick that one could lose their footwear and footing trying to negotiate a way out. The weather was a great leveller. No matter how fit you were, you had adapt to the conditions. Nobody completed the conventional triathlon on Sunday. However, those who competed ensured that the spirit of competiveness lived on the day where nature had its say.

Regina, Alan and I had fun. I personally enjoy playing in mud sometimes because I'd like to remember there's really nothing wrong in being dirty. Children always get scolded by their parents for being dirty or trying to get dirty. Dirty = Dirty clothes = Dirty Laundry = More time spent washing. So when such equations form, the reaction from parents would be to immediately refuse a request to engage in an activity that may potentially cause dirtiness. Some families with children in tow were busy admiring the back of my mud-spotted white vest for its boundless markings. They took in the sight of the vest and the mud-caked new balance shoes, not to mentioned the streaks of mud of the legs and arms. I was, perhaps, a sight to behold in our beautiful garden city. A anomaly. Playing field soccer over the past two weeks had left me in similar state, so the conditions were not difficult to adapt to. Taking to mud like a piglet would.

We washed up at home and headed out for dinner. Jas and Wen Ting joined us for our 'celebrations' at Crystal Jade and Haagen Daz. It was a really enjoyable evening, all the food for our 400m sprint, 20km ride and 5 km run. It would be interesting to see how we fared against the rest. It wouldn't have been such a smooth day if not for the rented car, thanks to Alan.
Thank You RAW!
