I refer to the recent furore over a letter that was sent by a young 2LT.

Here is my personal experience:

Good day!

I wish to share a loss.

I have been thinking about this and it was a restful night. It was this morning that I decided I had to share it with you.

My pair of inexpensive golden-white soccer court shoes were removed from the street soccer courtside shortly after LIVE run ( -- -- 06). I must first claim responsibility for being careless. I was wrong to leave it there unattended and thus invited trouble. The lesson learnt is to be careful about leaving things lying around.

A pair of shoes are replaceable but the sense of loss is hard to displace.

I can only hope the new owner of the shoes will treat them with respect.

Nevertheless, the joy shared is joy doubled, sorrow shared is sorrow halved.

Thank You for your time!

Wei Ze

The responses were remarkable.

~ Aww... That's a really touching story... That should encourage you to play more soccer and avenge your shoes' kidnapping. We shall fight on! The adventure continues on Friday.

~I am sure you will plenty of time to catch up on last night's lost sleep during your Sunday duty :)

~ ur essay is quite funny but not that straightforward. U should include "whoever return the shoes, he will be heavily rewarded (--- 264)
so what i can say is just wait for the shoes to come back.

~tis jus was not your day... jus be careful next time

~ Wei Ze, understand your feelings but it need NOT be made known to the whole ---! Pse exercise some control when it comes to vending your frustration!

(superior), pse talk to him.

~ I like your style of reporting.... cheers!

~Is it Eepro 90 SIZE 8? Pse come to CMTL clame it

~I understand your sentiments...I also lost my soccer shoes 2 years ago during Chinese New Year. I left them unattended outside the corridor and as a result, they were stolen... Let bygones be bygones and look forward to life.. At least both of us learnt a valuable lesson...

~ Do share your sorrow with us but at the same time, do learn from the accident. Take care.

~ On behalf on the group that plays soccer everyweek, I send u our deepest condolences. We will truly miss Goldie

~ Just stay happy, pay day is tomorrow. Buy a new pair and hope that the one who wear your soccer boots will lose all his game from today. Regards

The 2LT exercised his judgement and made his move as such. In a society that does not condone failure, we tend to fear being associated with failure. Perhaps an over zealous attempt to help those on the brink of failure has resulted in a lapse at the level which transcends the authority within the armed forces. Or perhaps this is a clearer example of the close-one-eye mentality that has manifested with the combined volunteer-regular nature of our security forces. That a spirit of "cham-siongness" pervades, helpful acts mistaken as cooperation jeopardizing professionalism. A fine line remains, between working smart and slipshodiness. As citizens of the nation, we have every right to demand the highest standards are upheld. And we should remember to ask that of ourselves as well.
