Men carrying bags. Men carrying handbags. Men carrying shopping bags.

I have an issue with men carrying bags, handbags. Of late, it has seemed more prevalent to me that there is a strong culture of handbag carrying by male companions. This does not include the population of metrosexuals who are carrying bags which are seemingly more feminine. It's not metrosexual, it's simply feminine.

We do not so much live in a equal world as we are led to so believe. There are some rules governing the behaviour of males and females. As such, these rules tend to preclude the action of men carrying shopping bags, if at all necessary and not handbags. The reactive surge I experience from seeing handbags in one hand and the girlfriend in the other fuels personal umbrage. Just observe the couples around you. You will realise that the handbag the lady dons is for an important reason; it is part of her outfit. By taking over the responsibility of lugging the bag, you are effectively removing an integral sector of her outfit. Now wouldn't you just burst out laughing if George Bush clutches his wife's handbag as she alights from airforce one?

All these issues are miniscule when you think of the poor young man who lost his life due to a mechanical failure. The Sheng Shiong owners have been admirable in their response. This is unlike the normal trumpeting of remedial actions taken to ' help the family to overcome their loss' as seen in the handling of the Nicoll Highway disaster. Help, if at all sincere, should be rendered as best as possible, without fanfare.

The unpredictability of life makes it so precious. Recognise and remember its instrinsic value. If you wish to carry her handbag, you should have every right to try. Just... try not to make it a habit.
